A small clicker is an excellent tool for learning. The dog quickly learns that "click" means treat. When training and learning, the reaction to the dog's behavior can be decisive. Click and give the dog a treat right after. After repeating this a few times, the dog will understand that the clicking sound means a treat. When the dog has made that connection, you are ready to begin the training. A good first step is to click for something that the dog already knows, such as "sit" or "lie". It helps you train yourself to click at the right time, just when the dog does what you want. When it works well, you can move on and teach the dog a completely new behavior.
